PHIXER for Field Recording: dual recorders, lav+boom outdoors, and honest mono for docs

Outdoor shoots stack risk: two recorders with slightly different clocks, a lav on talent and a boom a meter away, stereo mics fighting wind and reflections. In headphones the ambience feels rich. On a doc fold, podcast mono, or phone playback, dialogue chest thins and stereo beds cancel. Sync and polarity come first. Free phase-repair helps after residual L/R fights remain on a stereo print. It is not a dual-recorder sync tool, and it does not replace a true mono listen on the cut.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a slate/sync tool, not a lav time-aligner by itself, not a wind filter, and not a stereo widener. Use it after hygiene, when residual spectral cancellation remains on a stereo bed you must keep stereo.

Three field-recording failure modes this page covers

Fast outdoor mono audition (about 60 seconds)

  1. Sum L+R on the program / doc / podcast bus (or monitor controller mono). Listen to dialogue chest, lav body, and stereo ambience tails.
  2. A/B stereo vs mono. Note what disappears: vocal mid, boom low-mid, stereo bed width that was actually cancellation.
  3. Mute lav or boom briefly. Note which path thins the fold. Mute recorder A vs B after sync.
  4. Confirm on a phone speaker or single earbud path, then again after any bus FX / limiter pass, not only before cleanup.

Honest order of fixes (before spectral phase rotation)

1. True mono listen on the cut / podcast bus

Hard L+R sum or monitor mono. Habit: field dual-phase checklist and mono check workflow.

2. Sync dual recorders before tone fights

Slate, jam sync, or align clocks. Spectral rotation will not invent missing sync. Dual-recorder drift is timing first.

3. Polarity if a path flips

Lav vs boom, inverted recorder channel, mid-side decode mistakes. Flip Ø when body returns. Guide: polarity vs phase.

4. Timing / delay-align before spectral tools

Boom farther than lav needs a few ms, not a widener. Prefer one hero path for critical dialogue lows.

5. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights

If a stereo ambience bed or printed dual-path stem must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B. Watch the YouTube tutorial and the mono demo.

When NOT to use PHIXER here

Quick path: Cut mono listen → sync dual recorders → mute fighting lav or boom → polarity if a path flips → align a few ms → mono again after bus FX → phone check → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation on a bed you must keep stereo → confirm again in mono.
